Handy Hints from the 1900's
1) The Legs of old flannelette pyjamas; make excellent linings for little boys trousers for winter wear.

2) A great pair of overalls for boys...Boil two sugar bags, cut along the seams and press
, then dye them dark brown or navy blue.  Good for romping in the backyard.

3) To thicken a stew use rolled oats instead of the customary flour. It is body-building for children.

4) To keep an eye on baby and also see what and who is behind you at all times fit a rear-vision mirror on the pram.

5) Add some peanut butter to a soup or stew that has been burnt by meat or vegetables sticking to the bottom.  Stir it in well before taking it from the heat and the burnt taste will be eliminated.

6) If you have a chicken that you can't cook for a day or two, put an unpeeled onion inside the bird; this will help it keep fresh until you need it.

7) To peel a hard boiled egg, you will find it easier if you firmly roll it back and forth on the table before attempting to peel it.

8) If you have a pumpkin that is too large to use at one time, then try rubbing Bicarb Soda into the cut surface and the part you do not use will stay good until you need to use it again.

9) When you cook macaroni don't throw the water away as it makes a great starch for things like doileys and tray-cloths, and for a thicker starch keep the water from your boiled rice.

10) When frying eggs add a teaspoon of flour to the melted dripping, this will prevent the eggs from breaking or stinging to the frypan.

11) When you are boiling milk, add a tablespoon of water first and when the water is boiling rapidly, then add the milk.  This will stop the milk from burning and the saucepan will be much easier to clean as well.

Step 2:  Ingredients for Cake….
1 cup of brown sugar
1-heaped tablespoon cocoa
¼ pound butter
1-heaped cup self-raising flour
½ cup coconut

1 egg
Step 3:
1)Place your butter and cocoa in a medium size saucepan.
2)Stir it over a medium heat until the butter has melted and cocoa has no lumps; be careful not to burn it.
3)Now add the brown sugar and continue to stir until you have a smooth chocolate paste.
4)Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the self-raising flour, the coconut and the egg to your chocolate paste and stir until all ingredients are combined and look like a big brown ball.
5)Spread your mixture evenly in your prepared lamington tin; use the back of a dinner spoon to even your mixture out.
6)Now place your cake mix in your preheated oven, and cook for approximately 25-30 minutes.

Step 4:  After your cake has finished cooking, set it aside to cool while you prepare your ginger topping.  (DO NOT REMOVE YOUR CAKE FROM THE TIN)

Step 5:  Ingredients for Ginger Icing….
1 cup icing mixture
1 rounded teaspoon ground ginger
2oz butter
3 teaspoons golden syrup

Step 6:  Method…
1)Place your butter and golden syrup in a small saucepan.
2)Now stir them over a medium heat until the butter has melted and the golden syrup has mixed in.
3)Add your ginger and icing mixture to the butter and golden syrup mixture and stir until there are no lumps.
4)Continue to stir your ginger icing over your medium heat until it turns a golden brown.
5)Now remove your mixture from the heat and immediately spread over your cooled cake.  You must spread it quickly while it is still hot or it will set before you can spread it evenly.
Step 7: Once your finished slice has cooled, you may now cut it into slices and serve it or store it in an airtight container for another day.
